About the Maker

I make jewellery from beads.
It started as a hobby.

The idea came from a friend of mine who had discovered the magic of handmade jewellery more than twenty years ago. A historian and ethnographer by training, she had taken part in field research in the Rhodope Mountains, from where she had also built up a collection of old beaded ornaments. She showed it to me and told me everything she knew about each one.

That was when I decided to begin.

In the Balkans, the belief that a blue bead protects against the evil eye is still alive. In fact, it is only one of many different amulets believed to possess protective power.

At the same time, beaded jewellery has long been a popular and accessible adornment for both young and old, suitable for festive occasions as well as everyday wear.

I found myself thinking about a time when jewellery was made at home.
I liked that idea.

Every piece is handmade by me. Sometimes, it takes a long time to come out. I work in small batches.
